The Chicago Bears do not currently know who is going to start at right guard for them. In the tear down of the roster, they have yet to build it all the way back up yet, and it meant that one spot was going to be a weakness, and it was looking like right guard was that spot.

One name that was in the mix was Dakota Dozier. However, Dozier went down during OTAs and had to be taken off on a stretcher. Since then, the team moved Dozier to the injured reserve, and added a depth veteran player.

The news has to be noteworthy, and it does not appear as though they expect Dozier to be ready in time for training camp.

Some fans will brush this off saying that Dozier was a journeyman and a player who was not fit for the roster anyways. Those fans should look at the right guard depth chart and realize that even if that is true, Dozier was firmly in the mix to start. All reports were that he was operating with the first team through most of the offseason workouts.

His biggest competition was Zach Thomas, a rookie who spent his career in college playing tackle, and Sam Mustipher, a center last year who was a huge liability. It is not like Dozier starting would have been a triumphant achievement.

Most fans want Teven Jenkins to slide into right guard, but that is all on paper and in thought right now because the team has not actually done that. They have told Jenkins he is to focus on right tackle, even if he is working the second team. That means he may not start at right guard.

The Chicago Bears could obviously go out and try to sign a veteran but where they stand right now we are looking at competition between Thomas and Mustipher. It is easy to say that losing Dakota Dozier is not devastating, but just as easy to say that Thomas could struggle mightily as a rookie, and we know what Mustipher has done to date.

This injury hurts the Chicago Bears more than most teams would be affected by a player like Dozier going down.
