Leica Camera has debuted a special-edition version of its acclaimed Trinovid 8×40 Binoculars as an homage to Icelandic–Danish artist Olafur Eliasson‘s installation Life, which was shown at the Fondation Beyeler (Switzerland) in 2021. Eliasson, who’s well known for his works that play on the perception of color, dresses the binoculars in a bright neon green leather trim with special “LIFE” engravings and serial number text indicating the product number (1/250).
The technical specifications of the new collector’s models are the same as the serial production versions, which were presented in 2019 as an homage to the iconic Leica binoculars of the ’60s. Premium glass types and coating guarantee true-to-life colors and high-contrast viewing from edge to edge while an ultra-light and robust build ensures protection from the rain and versatility in all weather conditions.
Eliasson sees the binoculars as a tool for establishing a connection between the observer and the observed, inspiring a change in the way we perceive the world around us. “Life has begun. It is a liveable environment for humans and non-humans alike. Life is never the same! It comes to Life through the co-existence of everything and everyone that meet up in it,” writes Eliasson. “Life is cyclical and welcomes all living beings day and night. Life is not about human exceptionalism – we humans, might in fact be ‘upright mammalian weeds,’ mostly up to no good. Let us vegetalize our senses and conspire with Earth.”
