A pilot will see NHS community nurses use the technology to reduce administration and request second opinions from hospital colleagues

A pioneering NHS trial will employ a virtual reality-style headset to reduce the administrative burden on community nurses. The ThirdEye smart glasses, which incorporate Concept Health’s A.Consult software, will be trialled by nurses working in Lincolnshire and Goole as part of a wider innovation project that has received £400,000 in funding. The glasses are capable of transcribing the appointment to electronic records, sharing live footage with hospital colleagues for a second opinion, and using thermal imaging to assess how wounds have healed. Clinical nurse specialist, Becky Birchall, said that she had previously spent a considerable amount of time writing up patient visits. “These cutting-edge goggles will really help to cut down the time we need to keep for admin, supporting us to care for our patients,” she said. GP and founder of the company that developed the software incorporated within the goggles, Farhan Amin, highlighted that the smart glasses learn from each patient encounter. “It will automate key tasks currently performed manually giving staff time back to deliver holistic person-centred care to each patient,” he said. Patients will be informed about the project and explicitly asked if they consent for the technology to be used and their data to be recorded.
